This is BRU!
Currently Recuperating In A Foster Home!

Bru is roughly around 4 yrs old. He is one of the most affectionate boys you will ever meet, and has had some hard knocks in life. He is a big boy and came through the surgery wonderfully but would really like a place to recuperate without stairs. He needs a quiet place just to crash. He is housetrained, eager to please, and loves any attention thrown his way.
Please call the shelter if you can help. 250-746-4646

Name: Glory
Sex: Spayed Female
Age: Adult

Glory is a sweet little dog who came into the shelter with a terrible allergy. Her hair is starting to grow back now, and it's time for this girl to get into a home. She loves to get out for a walk, or two, or three, per day, and welcomes other dogs to come along with her. While Glory gets along fine with all of the other dogs, she does not appreciate being bugged. Glory’s skin will start healing much better once she is out of the busy shelter environment.

    Name: Ziggy
    Sex: Neutered Male
    Age: Young

Tara came in as an owner surrender. She is young, likely around a year. She knows her basic commands and walks well on leash. She gets along well with the boys but is somewhat fussy when it comes to other females. Tara has a strong personality behind that pretty face and would do best with someone who is dog savvy. Name: Tory
    Sex: Female
    Age: Young Adult

Tory is our miracle girl. Many thanks to those who responded to our plea for help when Tory was found with 2 of 5 puppies born on Friday, May 22nd. Her caregivers called on the 23rd to say that she had a puppy lodged in the birth canal. Sadly, it was not a puppy but her entire bladder had ruptured through her uterous and was outside her body. After emergency surgery, it was discovered that she had 5 more babies still awaiting to be born. First, many huge thanks to Keith at Central Vet who went above and beyond to save her life, and many thanks to everybody who rallied to save her puppies. Happily, she was reunited May 25th, and they are currently getting re-aquainted! Tory is lovely girl, likely about 2 years old, who will need a place to kick back her feet and start enjoying life once her pups are weaned.

Caesar is a magnificent dog who has come a long way and is really ready to get "outta here". He is an extremely smart, athletic boy who would best suit a home where he is required to respond to new challenges so he doesn't get bored. He is full of life and loves people and most other dogs. He is a three-year-old Husky/Lab X who, pretty much, takes life as it comes. He loves to swim and play ball.

Caesar's ideal home would be with someone who is dog savvy and can be the leader that he needs. He is a favorite of all of the staff and volunteers and we would sure like to get this boy into a home soon.

    Name: Cleo

    Age: Baby
    In Foster To Adopt!

Little Cleo came into the shelter, a very skinny, tiny puppy. She has completely forgotten all of that and is bouncing around just like any puppy would. She is happy, loves other dogs, loves people and just needs a home that understands puppies. She is a very sweet little dog.

    Name: Genny
    Sex: Spayed Female
    Age: 3 Years

Genny is a large Rottweiler X - approximately 3 years old, who was brought into the shelter with her puppies. She was very skinny and frightened. It didn't take Genny very long to realize that she was always fed, had a soft warm bed, and cookies and walks were included. She loves people and gets along with other dogs. Genny is trying to learn how to walk on leash and does listen but no one ever taught her the basics. She does very well though. Genny needs a dog savvy home where someone can teach her the ropes.

Our dogs love to sleep on Kuranda beds, but we do not have enough for everyone. We could use a few large size beds for our big guys. If you would like to donate a bed for another shelter dog at discounted price, please click here.

    Name: Peeps
    Sex: Spayed Female
    Age: Adult

Our girl Peeps has returned to the shelter because of a family breakup. She is not too sure what she is doing back here, and doesn't want to hang around long. She is a very sweet, fun dog. She gets along with others but likes to choose her dog friends. She has gained considerable weight since we last saw her and could stand to lose a few pounds. Peeps has a lot of energy so an ideal home would be with someone who has an active lifestyle.

    Name: Peppy
    Sex: Neutered Male
    Age: Young Adult

Peppy is a young dog thought to be between 1 – 2 years. He is a fine example of the Cowichan Special Blend. He is a very friendly dog who loves to be around people. He gets along with other dogs but likes to choose his friends. He is easy to walk, listens well and really likes his cookies. Peppy takes daily medication for seizures and has not had one since starting this medication. He is a lovely dog who would blossom in a home environment.

    Name: Elmo
    Sex: Neutered Male
    Age: Young Adult

Elmo is a medium size, stocky Sharpei/Rotti mix. He is very friendly and loves to be around people. He loves to play ball although at this time he only chases it. If you play with him he really tries to do whatever you are asking of him. Someone has taught this boy some of the basics but he really needs to go to a home where someone has the time and interest to further his education, preferably a home without small children. Elmo seems to enjoy the company of the other dogs, particularly the females.

    Name: Merla
    Sex: Spayed Female
    Age: 2 Years
    Currently In Foster!

Merla was brought into the shelter with her 9 puppies. She is a Boxer/Mastiff X between 1 and 2 years of age. She has energy to spare and loves to play ball. She has some obedience, but would do well with further training. She is good with children but because of her size and energy levels would be better with older children.

Merla was friendly with all of the dogs in her foster home but has taken a dislike to some of the females at the shelter so she may be better suited to a home with a male companion or better yet as the only “one”. Cats are unknown at this time. Merla needs a home where someone has the time to exercise her, and further her training. She is willing to learn – she just needs someone to show her.

    Featured Dog At University

Rusty is in foster/training with U Dog Cowichan.

In an effort to help adoptions go smoothly for dog and owner, U Dog Cowichan is pleased to be able to foster a dog from Duncan SPCA. By having a dog in my home and “on the job” with me, a foster dog will be in a more balanced state, receiving exercise, socialization and leadership consistently. This will ensure the transition to a new home environment is easier for everyone. The person/family who adopts the U Dog Feature Foster Dog will receive a free training session to get you started. Please contact Cheryl Hughes for an update on the current foster dog. 250 715 UDOG (8364)

NEW Updated Report Card For Rusty At Dog University:

Rusty is adapting well to life on the outside after being at the shelter for nearly a year!

  • One of the initial concerns was his tendency to escape which isn’t an issue anymore and he will spend many happy hours out in the yard with other dogs.
  • His waistline is taking shape as he is getting fit and happy from plenty of exercise and hikes.
  • He is well behaved in the house and is fine on his own in a room or curled up watching T.V. with the crew.
  • Housetrained.
  • No separation anxiety and has been left on his own for several hours at a time.
  • No destructive behavior or chewing.
  • Doing well with basic obedience sessions.
  • Loves to play fetch with a ball.
  • Contrary to original thoughts he seems to be fine with the cat and other than a curious sniff hasn’t shown much interest.
  • Is well behaved around the horses and has learned to give them space. (Sometimes mistakes the miniature for a big dog but is figuring it out!)
  • Sticks close by when out in the yard and loves to hang out at the barn while I’m doing chores.
  • Has had a little exposure to people and different situations like busy areas at the grocery store etc. and has done very well.
  • Some territorial barking around house or truck but not excessive.
  • Gets on well with the majority of dogs. Some issues with certain male dogs especially Rottweilers which we are working on.
  • Rusty will need a strong human leader to give him rules, boundaries, plenty of exercise, and affection when he has earned it!
