Carl - now known as Black Cat (BC) Jade!

Picture coming soon!

BC was adopted on March 20, 2008. He has settled in very well to his new home and has adapted with the other cats and the dog. He is a lovely, sweet boy who is a credit to your good care. He sleeps on my bed at night, and can be very demanding about his breakfast!

Thanks so much for letting him into my life.

Deirdre.

Two Happy Little Boys!

My two new little boys have adjusted well in their new home. They have great fun with all their toys and cuddle and playfight with each other any chance they get!

Ladybug is now known as Bella!

Picture coming soon!

This is Jessica Hein, the new and happy owner of the ever-so-playful Ladybug. Ladybug is now known as Bella and is having a great time jumping around and playing with her feather toy. Bella is now three months old and is giant!

Bella is a very smart girl and we haven't had one problem with her yet! Bella is also doing very well changing the perspective my Dad had on cats (he loves her and is now hesitantly admitting he just may have been wrong about cats.)

Bella is kept in my room with food, water, a litter box, toys and sunlight while the house is empty of people and whenever we come back and enter my bedroom she meows like crazy and climbs up your leg without any of your assistance. Paws, our beautiful three year old dog is having so much fun with Bella and they like to sleep together and hang out. Paws is called Pawsy Wazy and Bella is Bella Mella!

Bella is a very pretty girl who loves getting brushed and her eyes are slowly tuning a beautiful gold. Bella is most definitely the best present I have ever gotten! It took forever to find her being that the day I found her on the internet was exactly a month before since my mom told me I could get a cat for my 13th birthday which was March 11, 2008, the day before my mom's birthday! We drove up from Victoria on March 29/08 and I was shaking with happiness when I was there! I just love her so much and I wanted you all to know at the wonderful Duncan SPCA that she found the perfect home with the most loving humans possible! Thank you so much for all the cute little animals you have paired so perfectly with potential loving owners. Bella and I is having a blast!

These Girls Know How To Care!

Toby Has Passed His Period Of Adjustment!

It took a little while for Toby to adjust to living with us. When he first came he was quite naughty and destructive - lucky for him he had that cute floppy ear!!! That saved his bacon a few times! After the first few weeks his destructive tendencies slowed down. Now he knows that bones and balls are for chewing. And that shoes, plants, shirts, powdered paint, ski goggles, text books, towels, and permanent felt pens (etc!) are NOT!

Since Toby came to live with us we've moved into a new house. The next door neighbours also have a dog - a 4-year-old German Short-Haired Pointer named Tucker. Toby and Tucker have become best friends. When Tucker's not outside, Toby enjoys sitting outside Tucker's gate and whining plaintively. The two of them can play for hours - their stamina is incredible!

Toby is totally charming and people compliment his healthful appearance everywhere we go. He provides us with constant entertainment. He's great with other dogs, he doesn't bark in the house and he is really great at pretending he doesn't sleep on the couch when we're out. In a few weeks we are going to try to get him in a canoe and see what happens! We'll keep you posted.

Thanks for all your help with the adoption process. Thanks Rick for checking up on us and helping keep Toby's vet appointments in the early days. Toby is a fantastic match for us and we're really happy with him! Now if only he would learn to sweep up his own hair!!

Take care,

Sandra and Dean

Duncan Fits In Like He's Lived Here All His Life!

All the dogs get along with Duncan and even the donkeys and pony like him. The cats have not met him yet but I'm sure they will like him too. He is such a sweetheart and very smart. I can't thank you enough for all your help. Take care.

Emma Has Been A Terrific Supporter Of the SPCA!

Emma made a bunch of feather cat toys for all our cats, plus a fundraiser for us to sell them. Way to go!!!

The Girls From Khowhemun School Are The Best!

This most ambitious group of girls from Khowhemun School raised $104.20 dollars for the SPCA. They drew pictures and sold them, and sold anything they could, to raise money for the animals. Thank you so much! Rylee Keller, Ashley Robinson, Kimberley Schermerhorn, Victoria George, Stefie Robinson, Emma Oxman

Hello From Nora!

Nora's growing like a weed! She's now 16.2lbs and a bundle of energy. She's learned sit, shake a paw and lay down and is always keen to learn more. She loves exploring the garden and chasing robins and other birds from her yard. She's always excited about meal times and is such a joy to have in our house.

She's a perfect fit for us and we couldn't ask for a better puppy!! Thank you so much for taking her in and all the amazing work that you do that allows people like us to be brought together with such adorable and sweet furry kids. We'd love to come in for a visit once she's had her 3rd set of shots. Thanks again,

Danielle & Dave.

Maia seems to be settling down very nicely. As you can see, she has made herself at home. Her favorite place is sleeping on my husband's lap or on his pillow. We are very glad she came home with us.

Miracle, The Pampered Puss!

In the middle of March, we met Miracle at the Duncan SPCA, adopted her and brought her home to join our family. After hiding under the bed for a day, she decided we were acceptable and has made herself right at home. She is definitely a pampered princess and loves to be brushed and petted and to have a lap to sit in. Her personality has really come out and she chats to us and lets us know what she thinks with a flick of her tail. She is quite playful - you would never know she was a senior cat.

Many thanks to everyone at the Duncan SPCA for helping us to make an excellent choice! We are very happy with Miracle, and she seems happy with us too.

Hurricane And Rampage!

My little Princes - sleeping in the spare room!!! I got them to completly stay off of my leather couch in my room. I simply took them off it EVERYTIME they went on it. Now they never go on it. They choose my bed instead. (which is fine by me!)

Pebbles Is Now Called Jimmy!

Picture coming soon!

My fiance and I came to the SPCA in late November hoping that we would find a new addition to our family. After much consideration we decided on, then named, 'Pebbles'. He was so sweet and affectionate, and had the most gorgeous tiger coloring. He fit in right away when we brought him home. Our older cat, Chaos, loves having a little brother who we have now named Jimmy. He's full of energy and loves sleeping on the end of our bed. We wanted to thank you for the chance at giving him a good home. He is doing awesome!

Thanks again! We'll keep you updated on how he's doing.

Brandon gave us $105.00 plus asked for food donations instead of presents for his birthday.

Hello Everyone!

A week ago today, we came to you looking for another cat to keep our current cat, Max, company. The first puss we saw when we walked into the cat room was a striking black Burmese cross named Shan. I started petting him, and to make a long story short, we took him home!

He is now named Xam (pronounced Sham). He got that name because he is the complete opposite of our other cat, Max. Max is white, fluffy, and has a stubby little tail. Xam is sleek, black and has a long tail. He and our dog Tango are very taken with each other. They are playing together as I am writing this.

Xam is very happy in his new home, and we hope it will continue to be that way! One last thing; he loooooves his jingly, feathery, homemade toy! He is a very sweet cat, and he is definitely the one for us! Thank you so much! Good luck with the other "puddy cats!"

Emma, Liz, and Jon Newton. But mostly Emma!

Way To Go, Heather!

Heather Dubois went home after meeting Tootsie and rolled up all her spare change to donate to Tootsie's on going medical care. A big tail wag for Heather! Tootsie loves you!!!

The Noble Obelix Renaldo!

Remember Renaldo? We gave him a new first name, Obelix Renaldo. He seems pretty indifferent to the whole business of naming him. He is very happy here with us and we are very happy with him. He has a little friend named Teaco. They play together everyday. We don't let him out at night because there are racoons here and he has a personal history with racoons. His favorite indoor activities include sleeping on the couch, sleeping on us, having his ears, head and chin rubbed, chasing the cat lazor-light, and batting at string. He also growls when he hears a dog bark on tv and enjoys sitting in the window sill looking at birds until he falls asleep.

We are so happy to have him in our lives and can't imagine how we ever got along without him.

Take Care, Rana

Maggie Mae Has A New Home And A New Friend!

Picture coming soon!

Hi all
Just wanted to give you an update on Jenna now known as Maggie Mae. Here are some pictures of her and Arthur Black, having a wrestling match and doing a bit of bird watching on the deck this morning. She rules the roost. She is lovely, totally different from Arthur and they get on like so well together it is lovely to see. Thanks so much!

Run free, Caleb. I love you so very, very much!

Memorial Site For Caleb, a great SPCA dog!

Sagi is fine, Thank You!

Sagi is doing really well. He's grown in the week and a half that he's been here and gets along well with my big kitty, Bongkers. Sagi is very energetic and playful. He gets into everything (as you can see in the pictures.) He has definitely become part of the family. I took him to the vet a week ago and he's updated on shots and flea control. He'll start dewormer soon as well. My vet recommended starting the kitten at the same time as Bongkers takes his dewormer. Right now Sagi is passed out on his favorite couch.

Halle is very, very spoiled!

We adopted a young female cat named "Pearl" just prior to Christmas from your location.

We are just delighted with her. As you mentioned, she has a very affectionate personality and does socialize well with other cats.

Thank you all so much. I can assure you that our new addition, now named Halle, is very, very spoiled!

My Husband and I adopted a kitten in September (formerly known as "Cuddles"). We re-named her "Taseko" when we brought her home. She was a little skeptical about living with a German Shepherd at first, but now they are best friends! They chase and wrestle then settle down and sleep together.

Phantom and Piper (now Whiskey)!

Picture coming soon! Picture coming soon!

2 1/2 years ago I adopted Phantom from the Duncan SPCA through a picture I saw on the Internet. I live on the mainland and made the trek over to Vancouver Island to get him. He was a tiny, grey-and-white kitten with blue eyes and a smile. Phantom was so happy living with me because he could come and go as he pleased.

Finally I had to move to Calgary. Cold! Dreary! Calgary! Phantom didn't complain till about week after he realized he was no longer allowed outside. After a couple weeks of seeing how depressed he was, we got him a friend; Felix. Felix was a tiny kitten full of spunk that drove Phantom crazy, but they fell in love and could be found cuddling non-stop, when they weren't playing and chasing each other around the house.

Moving back to BC brought the ability for the boys to be able to go outside again. Felix was growing and needed to be fixed so took him to a Vet, got the procedure done, brought him home. He got sick instantly and died before we could get him back to a Vet. Phantom was devastated! No longer having his best friend around, he found himself making new friends in the neighborhood.

Once again, I had to move. Phantom found himself depressed again, now stuck in a 3rd story apartment with a bird's eye view of Squirrels and Birds in the trees. So while on a trip to the island for work, we stopped in to see what the SPCA in Comox had. Unfortunately they had nothing that we felt was going to work for Phantom. We traveled southward to Duncan, and stopped in. Low and behold, we fell in love right away with this little, spunky, no-tailed, bossy kitten named Piper. We signed the paperwork with the SPCA and took the little guy home to Phantom. It took less time for them to adapt than it did when Felix moved in. Now they are a happy twosome living together, playing together, loving each other. Soon Whiskey will be big enough to take on Phantom when they're in playful battle royale! Two of the best cats came from the same town!

Hi From The Big Guy!

After seven months, Ty has settled into his new home nicely. Whether he's chasing his ball or running at the dog park, he's always moving ;-) Ty has even completed obedience training! He was one of the smartest dogs in the class and graduated with no problems.

At 120+lbs, he still seems to think he's a lap dog which can make for some squishy situations on the couch. He has brought joy to our lives and is the nicest, friendliest dog anyone could ask for. Thanks to everyone!

How Is Marley Doing?

Picture coming soon! Picture coming soon!

He was known to you guys as 'Coon' the Bluetick Coonhound, who was picked up as a stray at the park. You'd had him there for about a month. We adopted him on December 31st 2005 when he was maybe 5 months old. So the two year anniversary is coming up! (Thank you so much for entrusting his care to us!)

Marley is now 2 and 1/2 years old, weighs 83 lbs ( He could stand to lose 5? pounds). Everything is going great. We are so happy he is part of our lives. We also did a foster of a purebred Bluetick thru the local SPCA here. We now wonder if Marley might actually be a Foxhound with Blueticking as he is much finer, tho larger, than a PB Bluetick Coon. Marley has another canine member in the family now. Started out as a foster Lab/Dane cross? who ended up becoming part of the pack. This newest addition is a 9/10 year old with a gamy back leg. Severe malnutrition when he came to us but he is now 103 lbs, and does a 3/4 hour walk a day with the pack. The boys get along great, tho Marley's energy level is a bit too high for the older fellow. Tho he is still a handful, we have always appreciated his energy and good natured playfulness!

Owning a Coonhound is an experience! They are so different in temperament to the average dog. But once we have had the pleasure, it is a breed that wins one's heart forever! But definitely they are not for everyone!! So we feel very, very lucky he is ours, and we are his.

So that's our 2 year Anniversary TAIL to you!! Thank you so much for allowing Marley to come into our home on that New Years eve of 2 yrs ago!!

Kassi wanting to come on vacation!

Kassi about 1 month after we got her!

Missy Now Kassi!

We changed her name to Kassandra (Kassi) shortly after we got her. I think her new name suits her well, and it wasn't too different in sound from the original "Missy". She is a wonderful cat, very full of love and affection. She likes to hang out with us on the couch when we watch TV. She sits on a cushion that we have a blanket on and seems very content. She also likes to snuggle with my husband at bedtime and in the morning, she climbs up on me and touches my face with her paw telling me it is time to get up.

She has her favorite toys, the sponge bouncy balls, although the tiny toy mice and the mouse with the bell on it's tail run close seconds. She also had 2 larger scratching posts, one that she sits on while we work in our home office area. She climbs straight up the post to the top with great ease and bats at the mouse attached to the post by a rope. The gas fireplace is also one of her favorite places to sit, right in front of it, soaking up the heat.

It did take a while for her to settle in. For a while, she would pace at the windows at night looking out one then the other. When we first got her she didn't like to be picked up and was like a slippery eel in your arms. She was also afraid of the toys and ran away from them. We are glad to say that, with lots of love and patience, she is a fabulous addition to our house and family, and a very gentle cat. We are very happy we adopted Kassi and love her very much.

Thank you so much!

Elizabeth Stimson and John Brett

Cairo's New Home!

Hello everyone,

My name is Mario and I adopted Rupert, an Australian Shepherd cross, a couple of months ago. Just thought I would give you an update.

I renamed him Cairo and he seems to like his new name. He has adjusted quite well :) I don't know that he was an inside dog before so he took a little while to get used to his new settings. He had some personal space issues at first as well, and would growl quite often when he wasn't very happy with something.

He is very well settled in now, and his grumpy side has almost entirely disappeared. His personal space bubble has gotten a lot bigger which is nice :) He and Meeka, my other dog, are getting along quite well - they have turned into quite the little brother and sister pair. They will play wrestle, share kisses, and also have the occassional "disagreement" - they are enjoying having each other around for company.

He is getting lots of exercise with us on Mt.Baldy at Shawnigan. He is really good walking without a leash while I am around which is great. He is a very very happy dog right now and he is looking forward to meeting my family this Christmas. Thanks very much, and have a great holiday!

Mario, Meeka, and Cairo

Hi! Remember me? I'm the quiet serious guy you rescued from a life of misery and then looked after for months and months until my forever mom adopted me last May.

I want to tell you how great my life is now. I am as bouncy as a lab puppy. I run to greet my mom and sometimes almost knock her over. I love to climb into her lap..…actually I climb into everybody's lap. My mom says I'm a 62 pound lap dog. I also like to climb into everybody's cars - if they leave a door open I just jump right in and make myself at home. I have a bashful, silly, toothy grin when I have done something I'm not supposed to which always makes people laugh. And I get to sleep on mom's bed, with my head on her shoulder. Sometimes I even drool in her ear! Heh heh!

I love living on the farm here and I go for a romp in the pasture everyday. We also have an alpaca and a bunch of potbellied pigs. The mama and papa pigs came from the SPCA also, and the mama delivered ten babes a few weeks later. They are fun to watch. And their food tastes good too!

My doggy sisters keep me company. Charley, the collie, has been here forever, but just recently my mom adopted Belle, a twelve year old sheltie. I am a real gentleman around her. And after six months I have finally learned to live in harmony with Allie the cat too.

I go to daycare once a week where we go on long hikes, and I have dog friends that I love to play with. And other dog friends come to my place to play or we all go for a run on the dikes. I sure live a good life.

But now I must tell you something very, very sad. The other day my mom discovered a lump in my neck when she was petting me. She took me to the vet, who found some more lumps. They did some tests and then phoned my mom to tell her I have lymphosarcoma - cancer in all my peripheral lymph nodes. Today I went to a big hospital in Vancouver for xrays and ultrasound where they found more lumps, this time in my abdomen and chest. I am in Stage 4 cancer.

My mom is heartbroken, I can tell. She will decide what treatment, if any, to use in the next few days. Without treatment it will only be a few weeks before I go to the Rainbow Bridge; with something called chemo I might last another year but I could be very sick for much of it. My mom says she would rather I have a good quality shorter life than a long, sick and painful one. She thinks she will probably use homeopathy and diet to keep me as strong and healthy as possible to the end. I like the diet cuz it includes lots of meats and cottage cheese and sardines and yummy stuff like that.

Anyway, in case I don't get another chance, I wanted to tell you how special you all are at the Cowichan Valley SPCA. You took very good care of me. My mom and my daycare person and even the people at the hospital say I am the bestest dog ever. And much of it is thanks to you. Rowowowowowow!!!

Love Caleb, formerly known as Toad.

Ho! Ho! Ho! It's Timo!

Timo dressed up to drop in to the Christmas Party for the SPCA volunteers. He brought sacks of goodies for all the good kitties and pups who have to spend Christmas without a family of their own.

What did Timo get? Timo got stuffed with treats from everyone at the party. He was a happy boy. He'd be even happier if he had a home of his own for Christmas.

Call them a canine miracle!

Sandi Trent of Cowichan and District SPCA holds five surviving pups that were found in a hollow log after their mother was killed in a collision with a car.

By Mike D’Amour
News Leader Pictorial
Oct 17 2007

A miracle is the only way the head of the local SPCA describes the discovery in a hollow log of five puppies born to a mother that was killed on a highway.

“I can’t remember being so excited ever,” said Sandi Trent, branch manager of the Cowichan and District animal protection agency.

The story really started out as a heartbreaking one Sept. 24 when Trent and her crew were notified an extremely emaciated, lactating pit bull had been spotted by several people around Highway 18, just west of Tansor Road.

The SPCA tried several times to find the dog, but found little luck until Trent spotted it in a mill area next to Bings Creek transfer station.

“It was on top of a pile and she was eating bark mulch,” the animal lover recalled. “I got out of the van and got within 30 feet of the dog and shook a bag of food at it.”

The dog looked at Trent before it slowly slinked away from the hand that was about to feed it and disappeared into a nearby greenbelt.

Trent said her heart went out to the animal that “was full of milk and an absolute walking skeleton.”

But she also realized she was between a rock and a hard place.

“Normally we’d put out a live trap, but I was worried if I caught her, how would I find her puppies?”

So, several food stations were set up so the mama dog could at least eat.

“We did that so hopefully we could catch them all when the puppies were older.”

But Trent soon heard reports from area residents the two-year-old animal was having trouble keeping the food down.

“I suspect wood fibres became lodged in the dog’s throat,” she said.

Then, on Sept. 4, Trent learned the starving dog had been hit and killed by a vehicle on Highway 18.

“I felt I was going to throw up, I would have given anything to be able to catch her,” she said.

A few search parties were organized in the days that followed, but the hunt for the puppies turned out to be fruitless.

Bears were spotted in the same area and Trent feared they’d make meals of the helpless puppies, if they were still alive.

“I gave up hope,” she said. “It was rainy and cold and the puppies were probably, at the most, three weeks old and I didn’t know how it’d be possible they were still alive.”

Then, on Monday, Trent received an incredible call.

“A fella from a landscaping place (just off Highway 18) called to say they’d been falling trees and found the mother’s babies inside a tree log.’’

Sadly, a puppy died after one of the felled trees landed on it, but five were still alive and mewling for food.

Trent said she suspects there could have been as many as eight puppies, but instead of lamenting that loss, she’s focused on feeding the survivors and helping them grow stronger.

Their stay at the SPCA will, however, be short.

This weekend they’ll be picked up and taken to a new home with a pit bull rescue organization — Respectabulls — on Gabriola Island where they’ll hopefully grow stronger until the day they are adopted by loving owners.

“I’m happy for the puppies,” said Trent. “But this is bittersweet because the mother died.”

Mr. Bailey, The Little Washmitt, making miles!

Hi Everybody From Bailey!

Thanks as always for the great work you do!! It's a whole year already since Bailey came to live with me, and he's a great little dog. Sure he still likes, better make that loves, to bark and be feisty, but he easily makes friends with dogs and people wherever we go. The Little Washmitt (his AKA) likes to lie in the sun on a hot summer day, play in the snow, charge through the woods on a hike, and even go for a nice long swim in the lake. Who knew? A Pom that likes to swim!!

But best of all, he loves to ride. He goes almost everywhere with me, and hasn't missed a day at work in the dumptruck, where he's logged about 70,000 km so far! He divides his day between paying strict attention (like in this photo) and, of course, snoozing, with short stops to explore all over the place. His workplace friends even include the commercial truck inspectors!!

Thanks to you all for bringing Bails and me together. I think it is for him, finally, a "dog's life".

Steve

Remembering Ben!

About 3-4 years ago, I adopted a German Shepherd that the SPCA had named Spike. I renamed him Ben. He had been taken from a First Nation's Reserve in Duncan and became one of the favorites at the SPCA.

Recently, I had to put him to sleep because of a disease that was causing many health problems - degenerative myelopathy. I have enclosed some photos of him in his earlier days. He was a wonderful, wonderful companion and we had many wonderful times together. I miss him dearly and will remember him always. He loved hanging around with his favorite friends, cats. He actually lived with two cats for a few weeks while I was away, and did them no harm, even tho he loved to chase them.

Ben was a gentle, friendly, and very sociable dog. Everyone who met him fell in love with him. Thank you for allowing me to take care of him for 4 wonderful years. I was honored to have him.

Katrina Kubinski.

Many Thanks Girls!
